Nikah documents in Pakistan
In Pakistan, Muslim marriages are governed by the Muslim Family Laws Ordinance 1961 and must be registered by a licensed Nikah Registrar on the official nikahnama.
Who registers the marriage
A licensed Nikah Registrar registers the nikah with the Union Council. NADRA then issues a computerised marriage registration certificate.
Typical steps
- 1
Agree the haq mehr, how it will be paid, and any delegated or conditional rights to write in the nikahnama.

Arrange the nikah with a licensed registrar, the wali or representatives, and two adult witnesses.

Read and complete every clause of the nikahnama before signing — clauses left blank can limit rights later.

Have the nikah registered at the Union Council and apply for the NADRA marriage certificate.
Common items to prepare
- CNICs of the bride, groom, and witnesses
- CNIC of the wali or guardian
- Passport-size photos
- Nikahnama (the official form)
- Divorce or death certificate if previously married
- Written permission of the Arbitration Council for a further marriage
Important notes
The minimum marriage age differs by province — 18 for both spouses in Sindh and Islamabad, while other provinces still allow a lower age for girls. Overseas Pakistanis can register through a Pakistani mission and later obtain the NADRA certificate.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
