The Sunnah of walima
The Prophet ﷺ told Abdur-Rahman ibn Awf: “Give a walima, even if only with one sheep” (Sahih al-Bukhari). The walima is about gratitude and sharing joy — not about competing with other families.
Ways to keep costs down
- Invite family, friends, and people in need. The Prophet ﷺ criticised a walima to which only the rich are invited and the poor are left out.
- Combine events instead of hosting several separate functions.
- Agree the budget with both families before booking anything.
- Put what you save toward the start of your married life.
