Nikah documents
Nikah documents in Nigeria
In Nigeria, many Muslim couples marry under Islamic law with the wali, witnesses, and mahr. Statutory marriage under the Marriage Act is a separate registry process, so couples often get a certificate from their local government or a Sharia court as proof.
Who registers the marriage
Islamic marriages are commonly documented by local government marriage registries or by Sharia courts in northern states. Statutory marriages are registered at marriage registries.
Typical steps
- 1
The families meet and agree the sadaki (mahr) and the date of the nikah.
- 2
Hold the nikah with the bride's wali, two witnesses, and an imam.
- 3
Get a marriage certificate from the local government registry or a Sharia court.
- 4
Keep the certificate safe — you will need it for travel, visas, and name changes.
Common items to prepare
- National Identification Number (NIN) slip or passport
- Passport photos
- Letter from the officiating imam or mosque
- IDs of the wali and two witnesses
- Divorce or death certificate if previously married
- Birth certificate or sworn declaration of age
Important notes
Embassies may not accept a mosque letter alone as proof of marriage, so ask which certificate they require. Rules and customs differ between states, especially between northern and southern states.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
