Nikah documents
Nikah documents in Malaysia
In Malaysia, Muslim marriages follow state Islamic family law and are registered by the State Islamic Religious Department, such as JAWI in the Federal Territories or JAIS in Selangor.
Who registers the marriage
Each state's Islamic Religious Department (Jabatan Agama Islam Negeri) approves and registers marriages. Requirements differ slightly from state to state.
Typical steps
- 1
Complete the compulsory premarital course (Kursus Praperkahwinan Islam) and keep the certificate.
- 2
Take the HIV screening test at a government clinic — it is mandatory for Muslim couples.
- 3
Apply for marriage approval online or at the religious office in the bride's state.
- 4
Hold the akad nikah with the wali, two witnesses, and an authorised officiant (jurunikah), then collect the marriage certificate and card.
Common items to prepare
- MyKad identity cards for both
- Premarital course certificate
- HIV screening result
- Marriage application forms and passport photos
- The wali's consent and details of two witnesses
- Divorce or death certificate if previously married, and approval documents for a foreign spouse
Important notes
Marrying a foreign spouse or a polygamous marriage requires extra approval from the Syariah court or religious department. Marriages concluded abroad must be registered with the Malaysian embassy or the state religious office within the time set by state law.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
