Nikah documents
Nikah documents in Indonesia
Muslim marriages in Indonesia are registered at the Office of Religious Affairs (KUA) in the bride's sub-district. Registration is required for legal recognition, and the minimum age is 19 for both spouses.
Who registers the marriage
The Kantor Urusan Agama (KUA) under the Ministry of Religious Affairs registers Muslim marriages. Non-Muslim marriages are registered with the civil registry (Dukcapil).
Typical steps
- 1
Request the marriage cover letters from your village or kelurahan office.
- 2
Register at the KUA at least 10 working days before the wedding, online through SIMKAH or in person.
- 3
Attend the premarital guidance session (bimbingan perkawinan) if your KUA offers it.
- 4
Hold the akad nikah with the wali, two witnesses, and a KUA registrar (penghulu), then receive your marriage book (buku nikah).
Common items to prepare
- KTP identity card and family card (Kartu Keluarga) for both
- Birth certificates
- Cover letter from the village or kelurahan office
- Passport photos in the format your KUA requests
- Parental consent if under 21, and a court dispensation if under 19
- Divorce certificate (akta cerai) or death certificate if previously married
Important notes
A foreign spouse usually needs a certificate of no impediment from their embassy. Registration at the KUA is free when the akad takes place at the office during working hours; a fee applies when it is held elsewhere.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
