Nikah documents
Nikah documents in United Kingdom
In England and Wales, a nikah on its own is usually not a legally recognised marriage. Couples typically give notice at a register office and complete a civil marriage, either separately or at a mosque registered for marriages.
Who registers the marriage
Local register offices take the legal notice of marriage. A mosque registered for marriages, with an authorised person present, can hold a legally valid ceremony.
Typical steps
- 1
Give notice of marriage in person at your local register office at least 28 days before the wedding — longer if immigration checks apply.
- 2
Check whether your mosque is registered for marriages; if it is not, plan a civil ceremony as well.
- 3
Agree the mahr and any conditions, and have the nikah contract written and signed.
- 4
Complete the legal ceremony with two witnesses to receive a marriage certificate, and keep the nikah certificate with it.
Common items to prepare
- Passport or other valid ID
- Proof of address for giving notice
- Final divorce order or death certificate if previously married
- Evidence of immigration status if you are not a British or Irish citizen
- Two witnesses for the ceremony
- Nikah certificate from the mosque or imam
Important notes
Without legal registration, a spouse may have limited rights to property, inheritance, and financial support if the marriage ends. The minimum age in England and Wales is 18. Scotland and Northern Ireland have their own rules.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
