Nikah documents

Nikah documents in France

In France, only a civil marriage at the town hall (mairie) is legally valid, and it must come before any religious ceremony. Couples usually marry at the mairie first and then hold the nikah.

← Select a country

Who registers the marriage

The civil registrar at the mairie where one spouse or a parent lives conducts and registers the marriage.

Typical steps

  1. 1

Submit the marriage file (dossier de mariage) to the mairie, usually several weeks or months ahead.

  2. 2

Attend an interview if the mairie requests one, then wait for the banns to be published for 10 days.

  3. 3

Hold the civil ceremony with two to four witnesses and receive your family record book (livret de famille).

  4. 4

Hold the nikah after the civil marriage, with the wali, witnesses, and the agreed mahr.

Common items to prepare

  • Valid ID card or passport
  • Full birth certificate issued within the last 3 months (6 months if issued abroad)
  • Proof of address
  • Details and IDs of the witnesses
  • Certificate of custom and of single status for foreign nationals
  • Divorce or death certificate if previously married

Important notes

A religious minister who habitually performs religious marriages before the civil ceremony can be prosecuted under the French Penal Code. The minimum age to marry is 18.

Family & wali considerations

Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
