Nikah documents
Nikah documents in Egypt
In Egypt, marriages between Egyptian Muslims are registered by a ma'zoun (licensed marriage registrar). Marriages with a foreign spouse are documented at the Ministry of Justice notarisation office instead.
Who registers the marriage
A ma'zoun registers marriages between Egyptian citizens. Marriages involving a foreigner go through the Ministry of Justice notarisation office (al-Shahr al-Aqari) for foreigners.
Typical steps
- 1
Both partners complete the mandatory premarital medical examination at a health office.
- 2
Agree the mahr — the advance and deferred parts — and any conditions to write into the contract.
- 3
Book the ma'zoun, or the notarisation office if one spouse is foreign, and gather IDs and photos.
- 4
Sign the contract with the wali and two witnesses and register it to receive the marriage certificate.
Common items to prepare
- National ID cards, or passports for foreigners
- Premarital medical examination certificate
- Recent passport photos
- Embassy certificate of civil status or no objection for a foreign spouse
- Two adult witnesses with valid ID
- Divorce or death certificate if previously married
Important notes
The minimum marriage age in Egypt is 18 for both spouses, and the medical exam is a legal requirement before registration. A foreign spouse who embraced Islam is usually asked for a certificate of conversion from Al-Azhar.
Family & wali considerations
Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
