Nikah documents in Algeria

Marriage in Algeria is governed by the Family Code. It is concluded before a notary or the civil status officer at the municipality, with the consent of both spouses and in the presence of the wali and two witnesses.

Who registers the marriage

A notary or the civil status officer at the municipal office (APC) concludes and registers the marriage.

Typical steps

  1. 1

Get premarital medical certificates for both spouses, less than three months old.

  2. 2

Submit the marriage file to the municipality or a notary.

  3. 3

Agree the sadaq (mahr) to be recorded in the contract.

  4. 4

Conclude the marriage with the wali and two witnesses and receive the family booklet (livret de famille).

Common items to prepare

  • National ID cards
  • Birth certificates
  • Premarital medical certificates
  • Certificates of residence
  • IDs of the wali and two witnesses
  • For a foreign spouse: administrative authorisation and, where relevant, a certificate of conversion to Islam

Important notes

The legal minimum age is 19 for both spouses, with exceptions only by court decision. The medical certificate must be less than three months old on the day of the contract.

Family & wali considerations

Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
