Nikah documents

Nikah documents in Bangladesh

Muslim marriages in Bangladesh are registered by a government-licensed Nikah Registrar (Kazi) under the Muslim Marriages and Divorces (Registration) Act 1974, using the official kabin-nama.

← Select a country

Who registers the marriage

The licensed Nikah Registrar for the area records the marriage in the official register and issues certified copies of the kabin-nama.

Typical steps

  1. 1

Agree the den mohor, including how much is paid immediately and how much is deferred.

  2. 2

Book the Nikah Registrar and arrange two adult witnesses and the wali or representatives.

  3. 3

Complete every column of the kabin-nama, including the delegated right of divorce (talaq-e-tafweez) if agreed.

  4. 4

Sign and register the nikah, then collect certified copies of the kabin-nama.

Common items to prepare

  • National ID cards or birth registration certificates
  • Passport photos
  • IDs of the witnesses and the wali
  • Proof of age — at least 18 for the bride and 21 for the groom
  • Divorce or death certificate if previously married
  • Arbitration Council permission for a further marriage

Important notes

The legal minimum age is 18 for women and 21 for men. Registration protects mohor, maintenance, and inheritance rights, so avoid unregistered nikahs.

Family & wali considerations

Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
