Nikah documents in United Arab Emirates

Muslim marriages in the UAE are concluded under the Federal Personal Status Law and registered by a court-authorised marriage officiant (ma'dhun). Courts usually ask for a premarital screening certificate first.

Who registers the marriage

The personal status courts register the contract — the Ministry of Justice, Dubai Courts, or the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department depending on the emirate — usually through an authorised ma'dhun.

Typical steps

  1. 1

Get a premarital screening certificate from an approved government health centre.

  2. 2

Submit the marriage application online or at the court with all IDs and certificates.

  3. 3

If the bride's wali is outside the UAE, ask the court in advance what consent or power of attorney it accepts.

  4. 4

Conclude the contract before the ma'dhun with two witnesses and receive the marriage certificate.

Common items to prepare

  • Passports and Emirates IDs for both parties
  • Premarital screening certificate
  • The wali's passport or Emirates ID, or an attested power of attorney
  • Proof of the bride's single status, attested if issued abroad
  • Two adult Muslim male witnesses with ID
  • Attested divorce or death certificate if previously married

Important notes

Documents issued outside the UAE usually need attestation in the issuing country and by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, plus a legal Arabic translation. Non-Muslim and civil marriages follow separate rules, including Abu Dhabi's civil family court.

Family & wali considerations

Involve your wali or family representative early. Agree who attends, who speaks for the family, and how mahr and living plans will be discussed with dignity.
