What is mahr?

Mahr is the bride's right: a gift the groom gives her at marriage, and it belongs to her alone. Allah says: “And give the women their bridal gifts graciously” (Qur'an 4:4). It can be paid immediately, deferred, or split between the two — as long as the terms are clear and written in the contract.

Keep it meaningful and easy

Scholars encourage a mahr that honours the bride and that the groom can actually pay. A heavy mahr that delays marriage or burdens families goes against the spirit of ease in nikah.

Weights are approximate, and scholars differ on exact conversions. Ask a qualified scholar for a ruling on your situation.
